A SPECIAL Campaign.

When Nickelodeon saw what the Hamilton streaming moment did for event-style theater, they leaned into the same kind of “you have to see this” energy and decided to film The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!. That’s where my first SpongeBob special started.

I flew to Plymouth with a campaign designed to stretch a single night into a full two-week awareness runway. But my pitch was bigger than a countdown. If we wanted people hyped for the musical numbers, why not remind them how deep SpongeBob’s music bench really is. Twelve seasons of songs, instant earworms, and wildly specific bangers. So I pitched a new SpongeBob SquarePants special built around the show’s best music, anchored by Patchy the Pirate and performed by Tom Kenny.

The logic was perfect: Tom was already going to be in Plymouth for the musical shoot, so we could capture an entire extra special while we were there, fast. Half a day. One tight plan. No wasted travel. While scouting, I found a pirate-themed golf course that instantly clicked with the Patchy vibe, and suddenly the special had a setting that felt like it was waiting for us.

That became Patchy’s Playlist: a music-first SpongeBob celebration that turned the musical into a launchpad, while still standing on its own as a piece of content fans could love anytime. We even produced two versions, one tailored to point viewers directly to The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!, and one evergreen cut designed to live way past the event window.
